Brexit, Trump… What Can We Learn?

As I watch the Brexit process unfurl, I wonder…

“How on earth did we ever get to this stage?”

The vast majority of our politicians seem incapable of putting their own interests to one side, and instead make decisions based on promoting their own ambitions…

Rather than working towards what’s best for the country.

Anyone, it seems, who’s prepared to compromise…

Or, God forbid, have the same views as someone in one of the opposition parties…

Is deemed to be either insane or a traitor.

Whilst I understand the issues here are complex…

And it’s not easy to find the best way forward…

There has been so much back-biting…

And so many people looking to make personal gains…

That I simply cannot see agreement ever being reached.

I cannot see a positive conclusion.

One thing that particularly amazes me, is that so many of our politicians seem to think that all Theresa May has to do is ask and the EU will give us exactly what we want…

Even if what we want isn’t good for the EU!

She was put in a situation that was almost certain to end in failure and disharmony…

Yet so many people have jumped on the band-wagon to discredit her…

Instead of looking for a solution that will give the best outcome for the UK.

What a mess!

The whole process, from start to finish…

From the day David Cameron gave in to the threat of Nigel Farage and UKIP eating into the Conservative votes…

And agreed to hold a referendum to decide whether or not we should remain in the UK…

Has been an absolute shambles!

None of this makes sense…

(Which means it will probably get worse before it gets better!)

None of this is in the best interests of the UK, Europe or the rest of the world.

Look, I’m no financial expert…

Or, indeed, a political expert…

And I’m sure some countries will gain from this process…

But I can’t see it being good for either the UK or the rest of Europe.

Sure, the EU has its issues…

And its faults…

But the only way to sort those out would be to work from within.

Something, we’ll now never get the chance to do.

And there’s no doubt that our membership in the EU has had many benefits for trade and industry, with many companies operating from the UK because of that membership.

Going back to the campaigns…

The Remain campaigners failed miserably in their attempts to discredit the Leave campaigners and also in their attempts to get across their reasons why they felt it was best for us to remain as part of the EU.

On the other hand…

The Leave campaign was a masterclass in targeted marketing!

Sure it was based on half-truths, scare-mongering and downright lies…

But it was a fantastic lesson in how to target the people that could be influenced…

Rather than trying to convince the whole population.

The exact same process used by Donald Trump in his successful attempt to become the US President…

And the same process used by the Labour Party in the recent election, in which they came so close to creating one of the greatest shocks in UK political history...

When, instead of increasing their majority, the Conservatives ended up having to seek the support of the DUP to form a government.

And that was always going to lead to problems when trying to get a majority vote for anything in parliament.

And as I sit here writing this post, Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn are in their 3rd day of ‘negotiations’…

Supposedly trying to find some common ground.

I say supposedly, because reports seem to suggest that each is wanting the other to shift direction…

In my mind, that’s not negotiation…

That’s not compromise.

That’s standing your ground and hoping the other person will give in to your demands!

As you will gather…

I’m not a great fan of politicians…

Or of the political system in the UK.

However, I always try to learn something from every situation…

I always try and find the positives…

No matter how hard that may be!

And from all of this?

Compromise is sometimes necessary in life…

Sometimes you cannot have everything you want and you have to compromise to get some or most of what you want…

You then need to learn to accept what you’ve achieved…

Appreciate it…

And be grateful for it.

Therein lies the path to fulfilment.
