21 Days of Transformation: Day 5 – Look After Each Other

Look after Each Other - Several Meerkats Group Hugging

“What happens in Maths, stays in Maths!”

I reflected on those words from my Head of Department as I sat at the front of my classroom, waiting for my first class to enter.

Comforting, I thought.

But then again, that’s how problems get brushed under the carpet…

Issues get ignored, only to become worse over months, maybe years, of inaction.

I wasn’t sure whether to take comfort in those words, or to worry.

Only time would tell which way things would go.

And over time, I started to take comfort in them…

As I grew into the team, I became part of a team like no other I’d ever worked in before. And believe me, I’ve worked in many different environments, under many different bosses and also running my own company.

So, working in such a close-knit team…

Working within a team where everyone…

And I mean everyone…

Everyone bought into the ethos…

Everyone looked out for everyone.

But not in a way that covered things up.

This team was about improving in every aspect on a daily basis…

About support and encouragement…

About innovation..

About failing gloriously, picking yourself up, being picked up by the rest of the team. And then working together to improve.

Mistakes could be made and they’d be sorted and corrected collectively.

Errors of judgement would be accepted as just that… errors of judgement.

They’d be dealt with and we’d move on.

We worked hard, but it didn’t feel like it was hard.

We enjoyed each other’s company and boy did we have some fun!

We became part of each other’s lives, too.

This wasn’t just about work, it was about everything.

Home life…

Relationships…

Worries…

Concerns…

Life…

Death.

We did it all together.

Nothing held back.

And even though, I’m no longer part of that team, I remember every member with fondness and deep affection.

And when I pop in to see how everyone’s getting on, it’s like I’ve never been away.

The team has changed, of course, but I can see in the eyes of the newer members that the ethos continues.

The safety-net is still there.

What happens in Maths, stays in Maths.
